Incorporated society 1964. The Guild became an incorporated society in 1964, enabling it to be eligible for grants. During the 1960s heyday of the New Zealand craft movement interest in spinning, weaving and dyeing boomed, night schools were busy and exhibitions were held every year. Guild membership increased rapidly.

The NZWB discontinued the Woolgrowers’ Award in 1986, announcing support for a new design award through the Crafts Council of New Zealand and the Spinners and Weavers Association. Bill Rushworth, NZWB stated the “homespun” look was doing the “wool craft industry in New Zealand more harm than good”. [4]. Since 1976 a flock of both stud white and naturally coloured Corriedales have been farmed. They produce sound, long fibre suitable for our worsted spinning mill.

Betty Booth and Vallory Brook are taking a 42 week course in textile crafts including wet-felting, needle felting, spinning, knitting, crochet, embellishments, colour and design. The students, ranging in age from 17 to 45, meet weekly at the Creative Arts Centre in Balclutha, some travelling for almost an hour to learn these skills from Betty.
